Umicore announced on Thursday that it has signed an agreement with Microsoft to set up an AI platform aimed at accelerating the development of its battery materials technologies.

In a press release, the Belgian group explains that the aim of the project is to facilitate its research in the field of batteries for electric vehicles, which it sees as a 'key' growth lever.

In concrete terms, the AI platform will take advantage of the Azure OpenAI Service model designed by Microsoft, which will be enriched by a multitude of specific and unpublished scientific models.

Operated in a proprietary environment, it will benefit from total security of intellectual property, Umicore emphasizes.

The company says it wants to create a 'bespoke' AI environment that will analyze, synthesize and bring together decades of vast and complex data from its research and development.

The company, which began studying battery materials in the mid-1990s, plans to combine its data with external historical data and information on the latest technologies from a variety of sources, including simulation models, experiments or images.

The agreement was unveiled on the occasion of the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, one of the major themes of which was 'Artificial Intelligence as a Driver of Economy and Society'.
