Compañía Pesquera Camanchaca S.A. reported financial results for the first quarter ended Mar. 31, 2016. The company reported revenues increased 6.9% to $111 million for the period ended March 31, 2016, with increases in the salmon farming division (7.7%) and the industrial fishing division (6.7%), despite reduced salmon prices and no anchovy catches in the northern zone, which was strongly impacted by the El Niño phenomenon. The results for the quarter include a provision of $5.8 million recorded in other income for the estimated net impact of the HABs (the amount not covered by insurance compensation for these events), offset by a positive $1.6 million in insurance compensation for damage to the Petrohué hatchery from the eruption of the Calbuco volcano in April 2015. The southern industrial fishing division reported a 17% increase in sardine catches, totaling 22,000 tons, with an abundant biomass between the 9th and 14th regions, but a reduced biomass in the 8th Region, where most artisan fishing quotas are caught, because of higher water temperatures caused by El Niño. These factors resulted in an EBITDA for the first quarter of a negative $7.3 million, down $11.5 million from the March 2015 figure of a positive $4.1 million. Combining these operating and non-operating factors, Camanchaca posted a loss of $2.7 million for the first quarter of 2016, compared to a loss of $3 million for the first quarter of 2015.
