American Airlines reported operating income of $12.57 billion for the 1st quarter, up 3.1% on the same period a year earlier.

At the same time, however, operating expenses rose by 6.9% to $12.56 billion.

As a result, operating profit was just $7 million in Q1, down 98.5% year-on-year.

The company thus had to contend with a net loss of $312 million in Q1, compared with a gain of $10 million twelve months earlier in the same period.

EPS thus came to -$0.48, compared with +$0.02 in Q1 2023.

Even though we are not satisfied with our first-quarter financial results, we have a solid foundation and remain on track to achieve our financial objectives for the full year", said Robert Isom, the company's CEO.
