Bush is a high-profile, progressive House Democrat from Missouri whose district includes part of St. Louis, and is a member of the group nicknamed 'The Squad' that includes New York's Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez.

She said in a statement the allegations against her focus on the role of her husband during her campaign for office, who Bush says had been a part of her security team due to his experience in the area.

She also says she had faced threats even before she was sworn into office in 2021 and had used campaign funds for security.

Bush denied wrongdoing, saying that: As a rank-and-file member of Congress I am not entitled to personal protection by the House," and denied using federal funds for what she called "personal" security services.

She added she is fully cooperating with the investigation.

The Justice Department declined to comment.

The congresswoman said two government watchdog organizations are also probing her campaign, and that the Office of Congressional Ethics had conducted a months-long investigation and found no wrongdoing.

The office declined to say whether it had conducted an investigation.
