The McClatchy Co. has chosen Longmont, Colorado, as its second digital-only professional news site supported by Google. The expansion comes at a time when McClatchy is nearing a bankruptcy auction to clear up debt it has carried since 2006 when it bought Knight Ridder for $4.5 billion. The new site will launch later this spring. The cost of opening the Longmont site will be paid by Google. McClatchy, which publishes 30 newspapers including the Sacramento Bee, will have full editorial control and ownership of the news outlet launched as part of the Compass Experiment.
