Tesco PLC said that its U.K. Chief Executive Jason Tarry is leaving the company next March after more than 33 years with the group.

The U.K.'s number one grocer by market share said Thursday that Tarry will be succeeded by Matthew Barnes, who will join the company on March 1.

Barnes previously worked for discount grocer Aldi having held many senior positions.

The company said Tarry guided Tesco through its turnaround and the pandemic, "rebuilding its competitiveness in the U.K. and putting customers back at the heart of the business."
