More than 550,000 Georgia Power customers were without power in Georgia as of 7 a.m. ET Thursday as the Hurricane Zeta crosses, the Southern Co. electric subsidiary said.

The company said it is working to repair more than 3,500 individual cases of damage due to already saturated ground, high wind gusts, heavy rain and fallen trees, as well as to restore power.

Georgia Power said it needs to wait until conditions are safe for its damage-assessment teams to enter affected zones.

Zeta made landfall near Cocodrie, La., a fishing village in Terrebonne Parish, south of New Orleans, as a Category 2 storm with 110 mile-an-hour winds, 1 mph shy of a Category 3. It is the 27th named storm of an especially active Atlantic hurricane season, nearing the record 28 tropical storms of the 2005 season.
