SA gold operations - no level 3 or above incidents

US PGM operations - one incident at the Stillwater mine as described below

2

12 August 2023 Level 3

Stillwater

mine

A storage tank containing used compressor oil leaked all of its contents onto site soils. The source of the spill was a 300 gallon tote comprised of spent compressor oil and water. The exact amount of oil spilled is unknown, because it was mixed with water in the tote; but it was determined that the quantity of petroleum product was greater than 25 gallons.

  • 915 cu. meters of contaminated soil was excavated from the site and transported to a certified treatment facility
  • Soil samples were collected before, during, and after site soil excavation to verify that the site clean-up met regulatory standards

Site mitigation was completed and this incident was closed out in April 2024.

Close-out of previously reported incidents

  • US PGM operations: In the 2022 version of this supplement, we reported a level 3 incident at the Stillwater mine which occurred on 30 October 2022. Snow and frozen conditions prevented final clean-up and close out prior to the end of the year. During 2023, mitigation of affected soils in this area was completed and this incident was closed out
  • SA gold operations: In the 2022 version of this supplement, we reported a level 4 incident (dam failure) at the Beatrix operations that occurred on 19 January 2022. During 2023, outstanding actions relating to this incident were completed. These actions entailed improving upstream water management (which is outside the scope of our operations and made possible through engagement with other stakeholders), and the implementation of engineering interventions to restore integrity to water management infrastructure
