EVA-45A: the spacewalk is successfully completed

December 12, 2018

The spacewalk under the Russian program has been successfully completed by Roscosmos cosmonauts Oleg Kononenko and Sergei Prokopiev. The main task of EVA-45A was to inspect the outer surface of the International Space Station and the Orbital Module of Soyuz MS-09 spacecraft.

The egress hatch on the docking compartment Pirs (DC1) was opened at 18:59 Moscow Time on December 11, and closed at 02:44 Moscow Time on December 12. The total time the crew of the Russian Segment of the International Space Station spent in open space was 7 hours 45 minutes.

When the multi-layer insulation and a micrometeoroid shielding panel were cut open, a small hole was discovered on the outer surface of the orbital module, which does not pose any threat to the ISS crew. Neither will it pose any threat to the spacecraft crew when they return to Earth on December 20.

The hole is in the orbital module, which separates from the descent vehicle soon after undocking from the ISS, and then burns up in the Earth atmosphere. Sergey Prokopyev, Alexander Gerst and Serena Aunon-Chancellor will be staying in the descent vehicle through all this time period.

The spacewalk of the cosmonauts and their activities outside the spacecraft were broadcast live.
