Rio Tinto reports that it paid a total of $8.5 billion in taxes and royalties worldwide in 2023.

A year earlier, this sum had amounted to $10.8 billion, including $1.5 billion in Australian corporate taxes related to previous years.

In Australia - home to almost half of the company's global operations - taxes and royalties totaling $6.6 billion (A$10 billion) were paid in 2023, including corporate tax paid of $4.1 billion (A$6.2 billion).

Rio Tinto also made significant tax and royalty payments in Canada ($601 million), Chile ($477 million), Mongolia ($371 million) and the United States ($123 million).

''We remain committed to being a leader in transparent tax reporting, while continuing to find better ways to contribute to our host countries and communities'' commented Peter Cunningham, Rio Tinto's CFO.

Over the past ten years, Rio Tinto reports that it has paid $76 billion in taxes and royalties globally, over 78% of which was paid in Australia.
