A RECORD number of people took part in this year's London Marathon, with more than 50,000 runners taking on the 26.2-mile course through the capital yesterday.

Runners of all ages completed the route for charity, including the 71-yearold British business mogul Sir Jim Ratcliffe. After finishing the race, Ratcliffe headed straight to Wembley to catch his team, Manchester United, defeat Coventry in the FA Cup semi-final.

Also among the runners were 20 MPs and peers, the most in the event's history, including Chancellor Jeremy Hunt, and former health secretary Matt Hancock.

In the elite races, Olympic champion Peres Jepchirchir beat the women's world record, and the men's race was won Alexander Munyao.
