Sean Connery, the Scottish actor best known for playing the spy character James Bond, has died, the BBC reported Saturday. He was 90.

It quoted his son as saying Connery died in his sleep in the Bahamas after having been "unwell for some time."

The internationally renowned Connery, who was born in Edinburgh, played British agent 007 in seven of the Bond spy films.

He won multiple awards, including an Oscar and several Golden Globes, and was knighted by Britain's Queen Elizabeth in 2000.

Connery acted in "The Hunt for Red October," "Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade" and "The Untouchables," among numerous other films.
