Fraser & Neave Holdings Bhd (F&NHB) recently celebrated the winning schools in the Penang region for its nationwide School Recycling Programme. The prizes were given to participating schools for their efforts to collect recyclable materials during the campaign period, which ran from 1 June to 30 September 2022. A total of 67 schools participated, collecting close to 150,000 kg of recyclable waste including plastics, aluminium, and beverage cartons throughout the campaign

The first-place winning schools in their respective categories were:

Majlis Bandaraya Pulau Pinang (MBPP)
Pre-school Sekolah Kebangsaan Batu Feringghi
Primary School Sekolah Jenis Kebangsaan (C) Eng Chuan
Secondary School Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan Convent Pulau Tikus
Majlis Bandaraya Seberang Prai (MBSP)
Pre-school Tadika Interaktif
Primary School Sekolah Jenis Kebangsaan (C) Chin Hwa
Secondary School Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan Tun Syed Sheh Barakbah

After a two-year break due to the COVID-19 pandemic, F&NHB resumed its collaboration with the Penang Island City Council (Majlis Bandaraya Pulau Pinang or MBPP), Seberang Prai City Council (Majlis Bandaraya Seberang Prai or MBSP), and other local councils in Peninsular Malaysia as well as the Ministry of Local Housing & Government in Sarawak to organise the school recycling programme earlier this year. The competition involved schools within their respective jurisdictions and is meant to be a long-term programme to help students gain a greater understanding about the importance of recycling and going green.

A prize-giving ceremony was held in Perangin Mall, Penang, for the winners in the Primary and Secondary school categories on the mainland under the MBPP jurisdiction, while another ceremony was held at the MBSP Auditorium for the winning schools in Seberang Prai.

"We at F&N believe the younger generation are important agents to realise preserving the environment and build a more sustainable nation. Initiatives like these are important to instil good recycling habits in them so that they will practise them in their daily lives into their adulthood. This effort needs the consistent involvement and support of teachers as well as parents so that they will continue their recycling habits in all aspects of their lives," said Karen Tan, Director of Communications, Corporate Affairs and Sustainability at F&NHB.

The guest of honour at the prize-giving ceremony at the MBPP was the mayor of Penang, Dato' Ar. Yew Tung Seang, while Tan Chee Teong, Council member of MBSP, did the honours in Seberang Prai. Jojo Ngo, Manager, Group Sustainability, for F&NHB and Terrynz Tan, Communications and Environment Director of Tetra Pak, were both present during the MBPP ceremony while Voon Hock Thian, Regional Sales Manager for F&NHB, and Mohd Tazree, Tetra Pak Environment Consultant, attended the ceremony in Seberang Prai.

Earlier in the year, F&NHB had also held a poster competition, "How To Keep Malaysia Green With R-Boy" as a supplementary initiative to the Recycling Programme which ran from 15 June to 19 July 2022. The two national level winners were Sekolah Kebangsaan Sri Kelana for the Primary School category and Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan Convent Butterworth for the Secondary School category, who received RM3,000 each. Besides the two National Prize winners, there were nine first-prize winners at the local council level across Selangor, Penang and Sarawak.

"It is never too early to educate children about the importance of recycling and sustainability. We will continue to work with local councils to reach as many schools as possible in our School Recycling Programme so that we can develop more environmental awareness in the country," Tan concluded.
