EDF announced yesterday that it had laid the foundation stone for the largest biomass power plant in West Africa, together with its partners Meridiam and SIFCA.

Located in the commune of Aboisso, around 100 km east of Abidjan, the 46 MW plant will be powered by agricultural residues and will meet the electricity needs of the equivalent of 1.7 million people a year.

The project is part of Côte d'Ivoire's 2014-2030 National Renewable Energy Action Plan, which aims to achieve 45% of its energy mix from renewable energies by 2030.

' A true technological and industrial innovation, the project will help avoid 4.5 million tonnes of CO2 over the 25 years of operation and make the Ivorian electricity system more reliable', EDF emphasizes.

The plant is scheduled to come on stream at the end of 2025.
