Boeing named a new president for its China business on Wednesday, appointing Chinese-born Alvin Liu, amid a strained bilateral relationship between the U.S. and China.

Liu's appointment will take effect in September. He replaces Sherry Carbary, who stepped down from her position in July after over four years at the helm of the unit.

"China has always been critical to Boeing... Liu Qing has a unique and profound understanding of the China market," said Brendan Nelson, president of Boeing International, who Liu will report to.

Liu was previously vice-chairman of Ford Motor Greater China and also served in a number of roles at DaimlerChrysler.
