Frenetic trading activity in a group of hot stocks is leaving big, widely-traded funds like the SPDR S&P 500 Exchange-Traded Fund Trust in the dust.

On Monday, as AMC Entertainment Holdings Inc. was the most-traded stock in the market, with BlackBerry Ltd. ranking second, the S&P 500 fund ranked 25th in terms of trading volume.

It hasn't ranked that low since at least 2008, according to Dow Jones Market Data. On Tuesday, the S&P 500 fund, which goes by the ticker SPY, ranked 44th.
