BP PLC said Tuesday that it has appointed Amanda Blanc, the chief executive officer of insurance group Aviva PLC, as nonexecutive director.

Ms. Blanc is co-chair of the Transition Plan Taskforce, a body launched by the U.K. government to develop a gold standard for financial and corporate climate-transition plans.

The multinational energy company said that Ms. Blanc will enhance the board's ability to support the transformation of BP.

The appointment will take effect from Sept. 1.
