Dornbirn, Austria - 30 years ago the Russian architect and designer Mikhail Anikst was the first to design
an Annual Report for the Zumtobel Group. Initiated by Jürg Zumtobel, then CEO of the company, this
rich tradition is being continued today by Isabel Zumtobel, in her role as Head of Arts & Culture of the
Zumtobel Group. Then as now, the core philosophy of this one-of-a-kind report published on an annual
basis is to demonstrate the close connection of the company to art and culture on a Group level.
"We were very strongly graphically oriented when we began. The first designers were graphic artists,
who were joined by architects later on. I believe that culture plays a significant role in a company's overall
differentiation strategy. From my point of view, that is why it is extremely important to network with
architects and also artists", states Jürg Zumtobel, former CEO and Chairman of the Supervisory Board
of the Zumtobel Group until the spring of 2020.
Annual uniques: the Zumtobel Group's Artistic Annual Reports
The constant exchange and close collaboration with architects, artists and designers has always been
an integral part of the Zumtobel Group's corporate culture. A wide range of personalities from the
company's extensive network have been invited over the years to shape the annual report with their
individual ideas as it engages with the subject of lighting - freed from the constraints of the Group's
corporate design guidelines or its individual brands. The result is a series of 29 distinctive editions to
date, which have now become collector's items.
"This year marks the 30th anniversary of our Artistic Annual Report - a project we are proud of every
year and put a lot of thought into with the most incredible collaborators. People that have turned into
friends that always challenge us to push the boundaries and see light from a different perspective. It is
a part of our DNA - the way we differentiate and identify ourselves and embrace the unknown", says
Isabel Zumtobel, Head of Arts & Culture Zumtobel Group.
Three decades: Highlight Series begins with Stefan Sagmeister
On this special occasion, celebrating the 30th anniversary of the Artistic Annual Report, the Zumtobel
Group and the individual protagonists call to mind the previous editions - embedded in the Highlight
Series, which will last until October of this year. This series kicks off with the Austrian graphic designer
and typographer Stefan Sagmeister who lives in New York. He reviews the annual report entitled
"Flowers in the Light" which he designed in 2002 on behalf of the Zumtobel Group. In a video statement,
Stefan Sagmeister once again focuses on his original inspiration and underlying idea. He also talks about
how he views his design of 20 years ago in the present day context. |
"It was a lot of fun to design the Zumtobel Annual Report because I grew up with the company in Vorarlberg and also, to be honest, I am convinced of the quality of the products. At that time, I asked myself what would be possible and wondered what type of object I could present in different lighting situations", Stefan Sagmeister began by saying.
