Heather Greene NCIDQ, LEED AP, interior design principal for Stantec, has been selected as one of Building Design + Construction's Top 40 Under 40 nationally. The honor recognizes outstanding achievement in career advancement, personal and professional development, and community service of individuals in the AEC industry.

As one of the firm's youngest female principals, Greene is the commercial studio lead based in the Stantec's Detroit office. For the last 16 years, she has worked to create human-centered, innovative interior design solutions that respond to user needs and the inherent qualities of space.

"Heather is a champion for her colleagues, her clients, and the community. Her passion for creating spaces that embrace health and wellness has had a significant and widespread impact throughout our firm and our clients," said Leonard Castro, Stantec's executive vice president for Buildings. "We are proud to celebrate her inclusion in this impressive list of innovators."

An advocate for health and well-being, Greene is recognized as Stantec's leading North American biophilic design expert. She led Stantec's research partnership with Harvard University to examine the impacts of biophilia on workplace design. Conducted through the Healthy Building Program at the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health, the study shows that biophilic design can improve holistic wellness and key cognitive functions, boosting critical business metrics. Greene's research efforts with Harvard have been embraced by Stantec clients in multiple sectors across North America and incorporated into the design of offices, schools, hospitals, and more.

Greene has also chaired the company's Getting Back to Business research, leading a team of Stantec workplace, technology, engineering, and sustainability experts to survey 1,300 clients on their fears, struggles, and concerns in a post-pandemic world. The feedback was translated into insights and strategies for the future office, which were shared back with our clients.

Her diverse, award-winning body of work spans multiple typologies with one singular goal-to create spaces that improve the quality of the lives of the people who touch them.

Greene has been active in a variety of professional organizations, including Commercial Real Estate Women (CREW) Detroit, Urban Land Institute (ULI) Michigan, Lawrence Technological University's Interior Design Advisory Board, and the Jewish Federation of Metro Detroit, among others. Greene is a supporter of children's non-profits in her local community, including the Judson Center and Brilliant Detroit. A champion and advocate for other women in the profession, she is an active member of Women at Stantec, an employee resource group designed to support and empower women in their career and personal development.

"It's humbling to be included on this list of so many impressive change makers driving innovations in design," said Greene. "Thank you to BD+C for this recognition. I'm proud to have played my part in advancing our industry and look forward to doing so for many years to come."
