In many ways, 2023 was a challenging year for PostNL, and 2024 is unlikely to be much better, the company says. Uncertain geopolitical and economic conditions worked their way into the operating environment.

Many measures had to be taken to reduce costs and improve the cash position. Rates were also raised. However, this was insufficient to absorb the strong cost pressure in a tight labor market with rising wages and the effects of developments in our customer and product mix.

Sales in the fourth quarter grew slightly to 889 million euros. Operating income grew to 77 million(pdf).

Parcels volumes grew by 0.9 percent, but mail declined further again. PostNL will deliver mail less frequently, in time even within three days. The priority service will remain, at a higher rate. 'A change in mail regulations is necessary to be able to further adapt our network so that the mail service also remains financially healthy.'

In Parcels, PostNL has "undiminished confidence in the future growth of the e-commerce market, partly due to the positive development of online penetration.

PostNL expects normalized EBIT of EUR 80 to 110 million in 2024.
