On the 27th, POSCO INTERNATIONAL (Vice Chairman Jeong Tak) announced the creation of 'The Fourth Fine-Dust Reduction Forest' in Kkatuyreom Park, Seo-gu, Incheon. This initiative is part of the company's commitment to supporting healthier urban living for citizens.
Aimed at mitigating fine dust from the Yellow Sea, this project is a collaboration between POSCO INTERNATIONAL, Incheon Seo-gu Office, and ChildFund Korea. The company has been actively involved in this urban forest project, with Kkatuyreom Park being the latest addition to its efforts.
Since 2020, POSCO INTERNATIONAL has been actively involved in this urban forest initiative, starting with Pori Park, followed by Moonjeom Park, and Yongmeori Park, and now culminating with the establishment of the fourth forest at Kkatuyreom Park
This fourth addition at Kkatuyreom Park features maple trees, known for their efficacy in creating windbreaks against fine dust, and azaleas, renowned for their properties for chemical absorption from the air. Additionally, the creation of a new moss-covered walking path has revitalized the park, transforming it into a diverse, nature-friendly area for the enjoyment of local residents.
Research by the National Institute of Forest Science shows that urban forests have the potential to reduce average fine dust levels by 25.6% and ultrafine particle levels by 40.9%. POSCO INTERNATIONAL anticipates that the four forests established thus far will collectively reduce approximately 174kg of fine dust and about 2.1 tons of carbon emissions.
"I hope the newly created forest to become a cherished healthy recreational area for Incheon residents," said Park Chul-Ho, Director of Corporate Citizenship at POSCO INTERNATIONAL, at the forest inauguration event. "We are dedicated to continuously creating eco-friendly urban forests, aiming to build a cleaner and safer environment for future generations."
Furthermore, since 2019, the company has been actively involved in the "School Forest Formation Project" for local communities' children. This program involves planting Strobe Pine and Magnolia trees around schools and pathways, effectively reducing fine dust and creating healthier learning environments for children.
In addition, since 2018, the company has been committed to the "Clean Air in Schools" initiative, which includes providing approximately 500 air purifiers to primary, middle, and high schools in Incheon. This effort is part of the company's ongoing social contribution activities aimed at fostering a healthier environment for future generations.
