INDRA TO EQUIP THE NEW SILVERTOWN TUNNEL IN LONDON WITH THE LATEST TECHNOLOGY

  • Indra's In-Mova Traffic platform will be used for traffic and infrastructure management, with intelligent transport systems to help manage traffic flows and reduce congestion across east London.
  • New tunnel is being built under the River Thames between the Greenwich Peninsula and the Silvertown district
  • Indra's latest generation solution will ensure maximum operability and efficiency for the tunnel, along with the highest standards of security and industrial cybersecurity
  • Indra's technology already used within London's 12 road tunnels managed by TfL, and is also being implemented in the Hindhead Tunnel for National Highways

Madrid, October 25 2023 - Indra continues to advance in its positioning in the UK and reinforce its leadership as a technology partner for major transport and infrastructure projects with an emblematic project for the country's capital. The company will equip the Silvertown Tunnel with its In-Mova Traffic platform and intelligent transport systems (ITS). The 1.4 kilometre tunnel being built in London under the River Thames will link the Greenwich Peninsula with the Silvertown district, with a strong focus on reducing congestion and improving connectivity across east London.

The contract has been awarded to Indra by Riverlinx CJV, a joint venture to which Transport for London (TfL) and Riverlinx SPV contracted the design and construction works for the project. The double carriageway tunnel, prepared for large double-decker vehicles, will include an exclusive lane for buses, coaches and goods vehicles, and will help relieve traffic congestion at this key London location.

The state of the art solution that Indra will implement in the new London infrastructure will take advantage of the most advanced technologies to optimise traffic flow, guarantee maximum safety and the best user experience for travellers using the tunnel.

Specifically, the company will supply the tunnel control system, based on its In-Mova Traffic platform, the intelligent transport systems (ITS), the communication systems, the radio communications network and the traffic signals.

All this technology allows real-time monitoring and a high degree of automation in the management, detection and attention of incidents and emergencies, reducing response times. This is fundamental in tunnels, where the first few seconds are crucial. Indra's solution also will facilitate the generation of reports for decision making and the design of operator policies.

Indra will apply the highest security standards to the entire project and, as part of its commitment to cybersecurity, will guarantee the highest level of protection for its platform by adhering to the recommendations of the IEC 62443 industrial cybersecurity standard.

The solution will be perfectly integrated with London's existing traffic infrastructure and tunnels, managed by TfL, for which Indra has already successfully implemented its technology to manage the 12 road tunnels and more than 90 km of metropolitan roads that connect them. In this new project for the city, Indra's technology will contribute to objectives that aim to improve the resilience of river crossings, and the performance of the road network, support economic and population growth, and minimise adverse impacts on communities, and on health, safety and the environment.

Strategic Project for Indra

This important transport infrastructure project in one of the world's main capitals reinforces Indra's position as an international leader in intelligent technology for traffic and infrastructure management, with projects in more than 50 countries and in cities that are international benchmarks in this field.

It also strengthens Indra's leadership in transport in the UK and its reputation as a provider of advanced and innovative technologies in the country.

In addition to managing London's 12 road tunnels, its technology is being implemented in the Hindhead Tunnel for National Highways. Indra is also a technology partner of the air navigation provider NATS to modernise air traffic management in the UK. Indra is working with NATS as part of the iTEC alliance, together with Europe's leading air navigation providers, to deploy the next-generation air traffic management system, already operating at Prestwick in Scotland, in European control centres.

This same year, Indra has acquired Park Air, a British company specialising in aerospace and defence communications systems. Similarly, the Royal Air Force has begun operating with Indra's long-range, transportable radar Lanza 3D as a comprehensive part of the UK's airspace surveillance.
