Indian Oil Corp. will double the capacity of the Ennore LNG import terminal in the country’s south-eastern state of Tamil Nadu, the firm’s executive director for gas business announced on November 24.

The country’s biggest refiner will expand the capacity of the Ennore facility to 10mn tonnes per year (tpy) in a move to meet the growing demand in the country for gas. Details of the schedule for the terminal’s expansion were not revealed.

The announcement comes as energy-hungry India is in the midst of attempting to increase the share of gas in the country’s energy mix to 15% by the end of the decade. Currently gas comprises just 6.2% of the country’s energy mix and India is keen to replace coal use with gas as part of its energy transition to a low-carbon future.
