We have attended the successful AACC Annual Scientific Meeting & Clinical Lab Expo in Atlanta in end of September, and now we are really looking forward to exhibit at the IFCC EuroMedLab Conference in Munich end of November.
In the US the NKF-ASN Task Force has been reassessing the inclusion of race in diagnosing kidney diseases. One key advantage of measuring cystatin C in addition to creatinine stems from the fact that cystatin C is less susceptible to factors that affect muscle mass (age, diet, sex, physical activity, race etc.), and in the final report the Task Force recommends "increased use of cystatin C combined with serum creatinine, as a confirmatory assessment of GFR or kidney function". In relation to Sepsis Awareness Month, we have discussed the role calprotectin can have in preventing sepsis, as the biomarker is one of the earliest for detection of the inflammatory response to infections.
Gentian is developing a turbidimetric SARS-CoV-2 Total Antibody Immunoassay in collaboration with the University in Tromsø (UiT). The quantitative antibody test captures the full immune response detecting antibodies targeting the S1 subunit with high sensitivity and specificity. It will be calibrated against the international WHO standard. Since the assay is platform agnostic, it can be seamlessly integrated in daily laboratory routine without additional infrastructure or workflow cost.
The NKF-ASN Task Force on Reassessing the Inclusion of Race in Diagnosing Kidney Disease recommends increased use of cystatin C as a confirmatory assessment of GFR as part of a race-free approach to diagnosing kidney disease.
Based on input collected over 10 months from hundreds of patients, patient advocates, medical students, clinicians and scientists, the task force published its final report on September 23, 2021, recommending the "increased use of cystatin C combined with serum creatinine, as a confirmatory assessment of GFR or kidney function."
The 24th IFCC-EFLM European Conference for Clinical Chemistry and Laboratory Medicine EuroMedLab 2021 that is to be held in Munich, Germany from November 28th to December 2nd 2021.

Sepsis Awareness Month: Calprotectin as an early marker to prevent sepsis
Early detection and intervention are critical to prevent the development of sepsis and severe events, as it is the most common cause of death in critically ill patients.
Calprotectin is one of the earliest biomarkers for detection of the inflammatory response to infections. The biomarker is predominantly expressed in neutrophil granulocytes, and it is released upon neutrophil activation in response to inflammation and infection.
The development of our turbidimetric SARS-CoV-2 total antibody assay is in the final stage. The assay will provide a quantitative detection of the total antibody response targeting the S1 subunit of the spike protein. By targeting the S1 subunit we will cover both vaccination and natural infections, and provide a tool for the long-term surveillance of both the immunity of the society and also the virus behaviour including virus variations.
