BYTE in order to perform R & D activities invests a significant part of the companys turnover. The main objective of BYTEs participation into R&D activities is to enhance the expertise, the ss and the assets of the company and to contribute in the implementation of BYTEs vision and strategic targets.

BYTE participates and implements various projects, both in national and international level. BYTE holds significant expertise and experience in the following fields:

-    Web 2.0 enabled social networking platforms

-    E-Learning, Gamification, Knowledge engineering

-    Collaborative working solutions

-    Security

-    Interoperability

-    E-health

BYTE has participated, or is currently involved, as coordinator or as a contractor in the various R&D projects supported by the EC and National Authorities. Some indicative projects, in which BYTE recently participated, are the following:

VERITAS (Virtual and Augmented Environments and Realistic User Interactions To achieve Embedded Accessibility DesignS): VERITAS is an FP7 Integrating Project that aimed to develop, validate and assess tools for built-in accessibility support at all stages of ICT and non-ICT product development, including specification, design, development and testing. The goal was to introduce simulation-based and virtual reality testing at all stages of services and product design and development into the automotive, smart living spaces, (buildings & construction, domotics), workplace and infotainment applications areas.

BYTE?s role in VERITAS was the integration of the VERITAS simulation and virtual reality testing tools into its collaborative working solutions products and applications.

ELDERSPACES (Managing Older People Social Relationships for better Communication, Activation and Interaction): Elderspaces was an AAL project that aimed at designing a novel ICT- based social networking platform addressed to senior citizens (beyond existing networks for seniors) along with a range of applications that will be delivered over this platform.

BYTE was the Coordinator of this project, had the general technical overview for the ELDERSPACES prototype and implemented the relevant web services and interfaces for senior citizens.

SPAGOS (Secure & Privacy-Aware eGOvernment Services): The goal of the SPAGOS project is to bring a framework that, unlike current approaches, will foster a holistic solution for security and privacy-awareness in the provision of eGovernment services. In that respect, it will develop a distributed platform spanning across all the entities participating at the eGovernment service provision chain and managing the communication, storage and processing of information in a secure and privacy-aware manner. The core principles to be leveraged towards the creation of secure transactions are the use of advanced cryptographic patterns that have never been used within eGovernment and an advanced role of electronic IDs, notably not only as passive identification tokens, but as essential functional components undertaking critical processing tasks.

BYTE is the engineering Coordinator of this project in ge of the overall tem specifications, architecture and integration of technologies.

GAME-IT (GameIt-Platform for Semantic Knowledge Management and Development of Interactive Educational Scenarios Using Advanced Multi-User Gaming Technology): Game-It aims to implement a virtual school platform based in the digital educational content and hoarded human knowledge. With this aim, the proposed platform will combine innovative results with mature technologies in order to enhance the everyday educational practice through: a) a tem integrating knowledge, b) the advantages of gamification and c) the interaction through online gaming with other users. The project will deliver a) about 50 scripts ready to use for primary and secondary education, b) powerful, ergonomically authoring tools for further creative use of the platform by the teacher. B2B models and Script Store environments will be evaluated for the commercialization of the platform.

BYTE is designing, developing and coordinating the technical work for the implementation of the knowledge integration tem.
