BYTE aims to enhance its know-how on innovative technological sectors and increase its market share in the respective markets, both within Greece and internationally. For that reason BYTE participates in co funded R&D projects of the European Commission and of the General Secretariat for Research and Technology (GSRT) , part of Greek Ministry of Education, Lifelong learning and Religious Affairs. Currently BYTE participates in the following projects:
1) ElderSpaces
2) VERITAS

Title

VERITAS

"Virtual and Augmented Environments and Realistic User Interactions To achieve Embedded

Accessibility DesignS"

Project

Duration

January 2010 - December 2013 (48 months)

Project

Budget

11.703.883 €

Project

Funding

8.000.000 €

Short

Description

VERITAS aims to develop, validate and assess an open framework for built-in

accessibility support at all stages of ICT and non-ICT product development, including specification, design, development and testing based on the virtual user concept. The goal is to introduce simulation-based and VR testing at all stages of product design and development into the automotive, smart living spaces, workplace, infotainment and personal healthcare applications areas. The goal is to ensure that future products and services are being systematically designed for all people including those with disabilities and functional limitations. Specifically, VERITAS will develop an Open Simulation Platform (OSP) for testing at all development stages that will provide automatic simulation feedback and reporting for guideline/methodologies compliance and quality of service. To achieve this objective, detailed virtual user physical, cognitive, behavioral and psychological models as well as the corresponding simulation models will be developed to support

simulation and testing at all stages of product planning and development.

ElderSpaces

"Managing Elderly Social Relationships for better Communication, Activation and

Interaction"

Project

Duration

April 2011 - September 2013 (30 months)

Description

Elder-Spaces will develop and deliver a novel social networking platform, which will

be customized to the needs and preferences of older adults. On top of this networking platform the project will develop a number of applications for building elderly communities, boosting social activation (including motivating face-to-face activities), intergeneration activities, as well as management and maintenance of social relationships and graphs. Elder-Spaces will build upon the success of popular networking tools such as Facebook.com and myspace.com. In practice Elder-Spaces will be built over the iWiW social network, which is operated by partner ORIGO. Also, selected applications will be built in the form of Web2.0 applications over existing social networks such as Facebook. Given that the Elder-Spaces platform will capitalize on the capabilities of other social networks, in order to benefit from their wealth of information, knowledge and millions of user profiles. Note however that the term Elder-Spaces platform, refers to the enhanced social networking infrastructure, which will be built over the iWiW social network.

Overall, Elder-Spaces will make sure that the platform appeals to people who are not familiar with technology without making users technophobes; on the contrary Elder- Spaces will be proposed as a means to optimizing quality of life (e.g., more recreation opportunities, improved healthcare and better mobility). In the Elder- Spaces world:

Applications are delivered in a human-centric manner.

Face-to-face contacts remain important and Elder-Spaces acts as a facilitator to

such contacts.

Working life is of primary importance, since it is a decisive factor affecting older people's social life and Elder-Spaces acts as a facilitator and promoter of the "older worker" concept.

Elderly users participate in the evolution of the platform.
