Shares of banks and other financial institutions slipped as traders adjusted portfolio allocations.

The financial sector has been among the stock-market leaders in the last two years, despite banks bearing the brunt of the pain in a commercial-property market correction.

Shareholders at annual meetings rejected separate proposals at Goldman Sachs Group and Bank of America to separate the roles of chair and chief executive at the banks.
