GMCC R290 Compressor Line Signed UN Demonstration Project

R290 compressor production line undertaken by GMCC (Midea's compressor arm) has successfully passed technical evaluations, as a result officially becomes a Montreal Protocol Implementation Demonstration Project funded by United Nations Multilateral Fund (MLF). Witnessed by representatives from the United Nations, the China Ministry of Environmental Protection and China Household Electrical Appliances Association, the signing ceremony of the MLF Demonstration Project was held in Shunde.

The project was initiated during the 61st meeting (July 2010) by the Executive Committee of Multilateral Fund (MLF) for the implementation of the Montreal Protocol. It is also supported by the Chinese National High Technology Research and Development Program. The project aims to contribute to the phase out process of zone-depletion refrigerants in air-conditioning and refrigeration systems.

As a natural refrigerant, R290 (propane) has a number of advantages and potentials over common refrigerants currently applied now in the industry such as R22 or R410a. R290 is CFC-free, thus no negative effect for ozone depletion. In addition, it has low Global Warming Potentials (GWP) while can achieve high efficiency in systems. Compared to R410a, which is commonly adopted by Europe and U.S.A for a replacement refrigerant, R290 has a much lower GWP which is close to zero and are less expensive for the refrigerant itself and the whole system.

Midea's GMCC has allocated a number of resources to develop the application of R290 in air-conditioning and refrigeration systems. Up to now, GMCC has developed some R290 compressor representative models, which adopt the latest DC inverter technology to align with future trends. GMCC will work further with related parties on achieving "greener" air-conditioning systems.

About GMCC
Established in 1995, GMCC is a leading manufacturer on air-conditioner compressors. The company is a joint-venture between Midea (60%) and Japanese Toshiba Carrier Corporation (40%). With strong technology and research capabilities, GMCC devotes to bring more green solutions to people's comforts all around the world. GMCC now has a production capacity of 4,000,000 compressors per year.

About MLF
The United Nations Montreal Protocol Multilateral Fund is to assist developing country parties to the Montreal Protocol whose annual per capita consumption and production of ozone depleting substances (ODS) is less than 0.3 kg to comply with the control measures of the Protocol. Currently, 147 of the 196 Parties to the Montreal Protocol meet these criteria (they are referred to as Article 5 countries). It embodies the principle agreed at the United Nations Conference on Environment and Development in 1992 that countries have a common but differentiated responsibility to protect and manage the global commons.
