Sumitomo Corporation (Head Office: Chiyoda-ku, Tokyo; Representative Director, President and Chief Executive Officer: Masayuki Hyodo) has released the ESG Communication Book 2021, which summarizes its sustainability-related activities from the perspective of environment, society, and governance (ESG)(https://www.sumitomocorp.com/en/jp/sustainability/report).
Sumitomo Corporation has been publishing its ESG Communication Book every year since 2018 to effectively communicate with various stakeholders. The 2021 edition of the ESG Communication Book incorporates the 'Medium-term Goals for Key Social Issues Toward the Sophistication of Sustainability Management' set in May 2021, as well as the 'Policies on Climate Change Issues' revised in May 2021. In addition, based on our basic policy of proactive disclosure of non-financial information, we further expanded the information with regard to scenario analyses and target risks in line with the recommendations of the TCFD*1 for which we announced its support in March 2019. Furthermore, we also disclosed information based on the IBC Stakeholder Capitalism Metrics*2 for which we expressed our endorsement in January 2021.
In addition to clear commitment to contribute to the creation of a sustainable society through sound business activities, we will also anticipate long-term changes in the business environment impacted by social issues strategically allocate management resources and create the value that society truly needs. We will continue to promote further initiatives to address social issues and revise the ESG Communication Book in a timely manner according to the progress of these initiatives.
1. Task Force on Climate-related Financial Disclosures established by the Financial Stability Board
2. A Stakeholder Capitalism Metrics released primarily by the International Business Council (IBC) of the World Economic Forum (WEF). The metrics offer a set of universal and comparable disclosures that can be reported by companies regardless of industry or region. Consisting of 21 core and 34 expanded metrics focused on people, planet, prosperity and governance, the metrics serve as the index for non-financial disclosure and the framework for disclosure and reporting.
Sumitomo Corporation is a diversified group organized around 7 areas of activity:
- retail distribution of consumer goods (24.4% of net sales): food products, apparel and accessories, pharmaceuticals, building materials, household and decorative items, etc. The group is also developing a real estate business;
- trading of hydrocarbon, mining, chemicals and electronics products (24%): oil, natural gas, copper, gold, silver, zinc, lead, nickel, coal, iron ore, resins, pesticides, petrochemical products, etc.;
- trading of steel products and non ferrous metals (20%): flat and long steel products, tubular products, aluminum products, titanium, etc.;
- distribution of transportation and construction systems and equipments (15.1%): spatial equipments, landing fields, forest machines, motorcycles, mining operating vehicles, etc.;
- telecommunications and multimedia products and services supplies (8.8%): TV wiring, data communication solutions, film distribution services, mobile telephony, Internet access and computing services;
- development and implementation of civil engineering infrastructures (7.6%): power plants, wastewater treatment units, industrial plants, telecommunications centers, etc. The group is also providing logistics services;
- other (0.1%).
