By Robb M. Stewart

Southern Co.'s Georgia Power subsidiary said Thursday it elected Chris Womack to succeed Paul Bowers as chairman, president and chief executive.

Mr. Womack, Southern's executive vice president and president of external affairs since 2009, will serve as president of Georgia Power, effective Nov. 1. He will assume the other roles with Mr. Bowers' retirement, which is scheduled to coincide with fuel load at the new Vogtle Unit 3 nuclear unit, expected in April.

Mr. Womack joined Southern in 1988 and has held several leadership positions, including executive vice president of external affairs at Georgia Power and senior vice president and senior production officer of Southern Company Generation, where he was responsible for coal, gas and hydro generation for Georgia Power and Savannah Electric.

Mr. Bowers joined Southern in 1979 at Gulf Power and has served as Georgia Power's chairman, president and CEO for the last 11 years. Georgia Power is the largest electric subsidiary of Southern.
