Sony Corp. said Wednesday its net profit doubled from a year before to 692.89 billion yen in the April-September period, helped by strong gaming and music sales.

Sony reported 546.16 billion yen in operating profit, up 7.1 percent, while sales increased 0.9 percent to 4.08 trillion yen.

The electronics and entertainment giant lifted its earnings projections for the business year through March. It now expects 800 billion yen in net profit, up 37.4 percent from a year earlier.

Operating profit is likely to fall 17.2 percent to 700 billion yen as sales are expected to grow 2.9 percent to 8.5 trillion yen.
