Royal KPN N : KPN network much busier again since Tuesday

It is not only much busier during the day, but especially in the evenings people are watching TV en masse and videos are being streamed from popular video-on-demand platforms. This can be explained by the fact that, for example, the shops and gyms are closed.

'Since Tuesday, we've actually seen the same pattern on our network as we saw in mid-March. It is not only much busier during the day, but also in the evenings we're watching TV en masse or we're streaming videos from popular platforms,' says Paul Slot, who is responsible for KPN's infrastructure. 'Last Tuesday in particular, new updates of popular games, such as Fortnite and Call of Duty caused an increase in traffic. In terms of capacity, we're able to cope with this well and we've also deployed extra capacity so that customers continue to have a good user experience.'

It's also busier during the weekends, because people are at home more than usual. It is likely to be quieter on the network next week, because many people will have time off. Christmas usually means 'normal days' on the network. That could be different this year as more 'digital' meetings take place. New Year is traditionally one of the busiest moments of the year for KPN, especially on the mobile network. But as many more people will be at home now, this is expected to shift traffic to the fixed network.
