NOS AND ALMADA TOWN COUNCIL PRESENT THE FIRST 5G BEACH IN PORTUGAL

  • NOS' 5G covers more than 5 km of beach on the Caparica coast near Lisbon
  • Innovative solutions involving artificial intelligence and video analytics installed on the Tarquínio-Paraíso beach give a preview of the beach of the future
  • Partnership with the local council means the beach is safer and more intelligent through monitoring of the bathing area, the number of bathers and busy areas on the beachfront

NOS and the Almada town council today presented the first 5G beach in Portugal. After installing the 5G network on the beaches of the Caparica coast, NOS chose the Tarquínio-Paraíso beach to demonstrate what the beach of the future will look like, thus strengthening its leadership in the race to the new age of mobile telecommunications in Portugal.

As part of this innovative partnership, the beach has been equipped with artificial intelligence and video analytics systems, installed on NOS' 5G network, which support automated functionalities to monitor people, objects and vessels, detect groups of peopleand count the number of peopleaccessing the beach.

The solution implemented currently has three main strengths, which were demonstrated by NOS at the presentation of the first 5G Beach, and which will remain in use until the end of the summer season:

  • Safety: the solution draws an imaginary line in the sea, which enables bathing zones to be monitored and to detect if any swimmer moves too far away from the shoreline, as well as identifying any foreign objects or vessels in the area reserved for swimmers. Alerts are sent to the organizations responsible for beach safety, such as the maritime police, life guards and town council authorities.
  • Occupancy: with five stations set up along the beach, it is possible to automatically work out beach occupancy, detecting areas on the beach where there are excessive numbers of people. The solution also means that the number of people entering and leaving the beach can be counted, automatically monitoring the flow of bathers, with a traffic light system activated when the number of people per square meter is above or below that stipulated by the authorities.
  • Environment: detection of the maximum capacity levels of rubbish bins on the beach and the sending of alerts to collect the waste and change the bins.

According to Manuel Ramalho Eanes, Executive Board Director of NOS, "today we underline once again our ambition to lead in the delivery of 5G to society and to Portugal. The fifth generation of mobile communications will greatly accelerate the capabilities of Portuguese Intelligent Cities, which will increasingly be safer, more efficient and closer to people. As from today, Almada finds itself at the cutting

edge of technology in terms of safety and protection solutions for the community in the context of tourism, one of the defining sectors in Portuguese society".

Inês de Medeiros, Mayor of Almada Town Council, says: "for the first time in Portugal, Almada is testing a solution of the future, which is having practical results being felt already today and allowing us to get a glimpse of what cities will be like in the future. Almada is betting on the best of innovation and technology, founded on partnerships and collaboration, in order to provide higher levels of safety and well-beingfor its citizens and all those who visit us".

NOS' 5G network available on this beach supports an intelligent system of monitoring and surveillance that is able to detect automatically abnormal situations or those that put the safety of people at r isk. Once these have been detected, the system triggers the sending of alerts to those entities responsible f or beach safety (maritime police, life guards and town council authorities) or changes the color of traffic lights that control access to the beach in the context of the Covid-19 pandemic.

Thanks to a system comprising five stations, each equipped with one or more artificial vision cameras with autofocus lenses and 5G connectivity, the technological solutions installed on the Tarquínio-Paraíso beach have the capacity to analyze images collected and process them via automatic learning, complementing the real time management of the beach through the use of technology.

Accessible using a smartphone/tablet/smartwatch, all the information is consolidated and made available on a control and monitoring platform that presents the data in a simple and intuitive manner, and sends out alerts when it identifies abnormal or risk situations when compared to the parameters considered to be appropriate. This can be consulted at any time or place by users responsible for the safety of beaches, who thereby have a greater ability to anticipate, prevent and act in situations of danger or emergency.

In the future, the solution will have more advanced functionalities, such as the possibility of detecting the potential risk of someone drowning, which will trigger immediate alerts. Other developments are also in the pipeline, such as the identification of children or objects lost on the beach, monitoring the sea and other meteorological metrics using autonomous drones, detecting rubbish also in the sea and cleaning it up using robots, among other features. In the long term, it is possible to envisage a mass roll out of these solutions, due to the gradual fall in the costs that greater use of 5G will allow, in view of the fact that all the data are processed in the cloud and in real time, on a standalone basis. In addition, entertainment on the beach will be possible by providing gaming, augmented reality and virtual reality contents through more immersive and 360º experiences.

An almost total network resilience, more interconnected objects, reduced response time, high speeds and greater band width to access data and transmit alerts in real time, are some of the unique features of 5G applied to the hyper-connected cities of the future and with an impact on the tourism and leisure sector, in particular in relation to surveillance and safety on the beach.

As one of the main enablers of the digitalization of society, NOS' goal is to lead the technological revolution that is arriving with 5G. Empowering Portuguese municipalities with technology, developing its network and building partnerships are integral parts of the company's leadership strategy.
