NOS ACCELERATES THE DIGITAL TRANSFORMATION OF MADEIRA WITH A NEW DATA CENTER

• Upgrade of the Data Center in Madeira means the center is equipped with the most advanced technology available and ready for the future
• The project involves an investment of 500.000 euros
• The new NOS Madeira Data Center increases energy efficiency by almost 30%

NOS Madeira inaugurated today its fully renovated Data Center in Funchal. The infrastructure has been furnished with the most advanced technology, so that support to the operator's business can be strengthened, in particular for the Cloud and related services in the Autonomous Region of Madeira.

The latest NOS Madeira Data Center replaces infrastructure that was almost three decades old and is part of investment by the company to increase the capacity and reliability of services provided to customers of NOS Madeira, improving the delivery of new solutions to the business and individual markets, and meeting the present and future needs of the digital society.

Now better prepared to support latest generation technologies, including 5G and its innovative features, the new Data Center uses highly secure and more sustainable solutions. By duplicating network systems and optimizing energy and cooling systems, significant savings can be made, making the center 28% more efficient compared to the previous one.

Representing an investment of 500,000 euros, the upgrade of the center involved a team of 50 staff, working over a period of 6 months. During this time, almost 950 items of equipment were migrated without impacting overall residential and business services provided by NOS Madeira, thanks t o extra efforts to keep operations functioning normally and at the usual level of quality.

Committed to the development of the Autonomous Region of Madeira, this project reflects NOS Madeira's ongoing focus on the digital transformation of the islands, as well as its ambition to deliver services of excellence and innovative solutions.

According to Manuel Ramalho Eanes, Board Director of NOS, "as from today, companies and private customers in Madeira have at their disposal one of the most modern and efficient Data Centers in Portugal, 100% ready for the challenges of the future, such as 5G. This new infrastructure underlines NOS´ firm commitment to the Region, and brings more solutions, capacity and security to services provided to customers in Madeira".

NOS' Data Center facilities are the target of continuous investment by the operator, involving around 10M€ each year. With this new facility, NOS now has in Madeira a cumulative area of 300 m2 of technical rooms

and accommodation spread among two Data Centers in the Region, bringing NOS' total to 3,487 m2 of installed capacity distributed among seven Data Centers across Portugal.

About the new NOS Data Center in Madeira

Spread across six rooms, the Data Center is supported by two independent energy facilities for increased resilience, complemented by 1 emergency generator and 2 DC independent ups systems, which allow consumption of up to 400Kw of power. Air conditioning is provided by a central facility with cold corridors and redundant In-Row systems. The construction of the facility was guided by operational sustainability considerations so that the most advanced technologies were installed in terms of ener gy efficiency and structural flexibility while incorporating modular scalability at all levels of the facility.

The network system is made up of four networks, two in service dedicated to the transmission of customer services, a laboratory network on which are tested new solutions an d procedures, and an out-of-band management network dedicated to accessing and configuring equipment.

The new facility has 31 Km of optical fiber behind the scenes as well as 12Km of Ethernet cable. During the construction of the new Data Center, 7,000 meters of coaxial cable and 2,500 meters of electrical cable were laid and 350 meters of cable trays were used.
