NOS AND APDL PRESENT THE FIRST 5G

PORT IN PORTUGAL

  • Port of Leixões is pioneer in the use of 5G drones to monitor in real time manoeuvres involving risk
  • Drones are equipped with sensors which measure the impact of operations on the environment
  • NOS' 5G contributes towards the security and efficiency of operations

Since 2019, Matosinhos has become a living laboratory of innovation, to which NOS has actively contributed, making the city more intelligent and applying 5G technology to projects that help towards increasing its competitiveness and efficiency in a range of areas, in particular in industry.

It is against this background that NOS and APDL - Management of the Ports of the Douro, Leixões and Viana do Castelo - present the First 5G Port in Portugal. Entirely covered by NOS´ fifth generation of mobile networks, the Port of Leixões will now see significant improvements in competitiveness, efficiency and security in the management of this important national infrastructure.

In 2020, and despite the impact of the pandemic, the Port of Leixões handled around 17.1 million tons of cargo. In this respect, it achieved a new historic maximum of 703,919 TEUS (Twenty Foot Equivalent Units), growing 2.6% compared to 2019, which indicates not just the resilience of the import and export companies that operate in its sphere of influence but also the capacity of the port eco-system to quickly adapt to changing conditions in the market. The partnership with NOS will enable APDL to monitor these complex operations with the help of 5G drones, equipped with cameras that can transmit in real time high quality video images to the control room.

Using these remote monitoring methods, not only the operations center but also ship pilots can monitor a range of high risk manoeuvres, while at the same time increasing the ability to carry out inspections on site with greater frequency, flexibility and security, as well as providing a crucial support for managing the response and mitigating the consequences in case of any incidents.

The 5G drones are also ready to be equipped with environmental, noise and air quality sensors that are able to measure the impacts of each operation in real time and directly on site.

In addition to drones, the NOS and APDL teams are also looking at the best ways to make the most of augmented reality and digital twinning technology in order to make procedures for maintaining machinery and logistics more efficient, implementing IoT sensors to know in real time the location and state of all assets.

According to Manuel Ramalho Eanes, Executive Board Director of NOS, "5G, as a cornerstone of what 4.0 industry is, allows us to define the future of the competitiveness of companies in a broad range of sectors. Thanks to the solutions based on 5G that we are implementing, the Port of Leixões,

one of the most important infrastructures in the country, can strengthen its competitive position, not just in the context of Iberia but also Europe".

As for Nuno Araújo, Chairman of the Board of Directors of APDL, "today, technology is probably the most relevant factor of competitiveness for an infrastructure like ours. We intend to carry out our operations in the fastest, most secure and efficient manner. To achieve this, for the Port of Leixões it is absolutely crucial to use innovative technologies such as 5G, in order to accelerate our process of digital transformation and thus increase productivity and improve our position ing".

5G promises to be the main accelerator of the 4th industrial revolution. Due to its high speeds, hyper- reduced latencies and massive number of links, the fifth generation of mobile communications will contribute towards leveraging a range of relevant use cases and bring new applications that promise to change the way that companies work and society functions.
