NCC and Pembroke have signed a contract to build a new office building in the Vallila area in Helsinki. An obsolete office will be replaced by a new sustainable and energy efficient 21,000 sqm building.

Designed by Tengbom Architects, the building features distinctive clean and contemporary architecture. With large 2,000 sqm floorplates and 3m floor-to-ceiling heights, it is designed to the highest LEED Platinum environmental standard.

"We are happy to be working with NCC to create a sustainable and energy efficient building, with a focus on flexibility to adapt to future needs. Strategically located in Vallila, it underlines the long-term vision we share with the City of Helsinki to create a vibrant area and creative place to work," says Kristin Willerström, Regional Director Nordics, Pembroke.

NCC is responsible for the design development and construction of the new building.

"NCC has developed and built several demanding office projects in Finland and other Nordic countries. We look forward to working together with Pembroke building on the successful collaboration from the Mästerhuset project completed in 2015 - the first LEED Platinum office building in central Stockholm," says Kati Tauriainen, Head of Non-residential construction at NCC Building Finland.

Energy efficient building heated with geothermal wells
The City of Helsinki wants to develop the Vallila area into a significant concentration of workplaces, culture and events. The new, sustainable office building will offer possibilities to enhance and enrich interactions with the natural environment, as well as the local neighborhood and surrounding areas.

"Driven by the future occupier, Nordea, the most up-to-date energy and sustainability practices will be applied throughout the design, construction, and operational phases. A comprehensive geothermal heating system will produce more than 80% of the building's thermal energy needs, i.e. more than 800 MWh per year. This could lead to an estimated reduction of approximately 1,900,000 kg of CO2 emissions over 30 years," says Tauriainen.

Demolition of the existing building will start in March 2021. The new building is estimated to complete early 2024. The order will be registered in the NCC Building Nordics business area in the first quarter of 2021. The parties have agreed not to disclose the order value.
