MediaTek : Accelerates its Sustainability Goals by Announcing its Commitment to Net Zero Emissions by 2050

HSINCHU, Taiwan - September 27, 2022 - To mitigate greenhouse gas driven climate change and respond to global net zero initiatives, MediaTek's Board of Directors and its Sustainability Committee have committed to the goal of net zero emissions by 2050. In this drive towards net zero, MediaTek aims to reduce total carbon emissions, as part of its deep commitment to sustainability.

MediaTek is at the forefront of chipset innovation and R&D for fabless semiconductor companies, which already have relatively low carbon emissions. In response to climate change and extreme weather events, MediaTek has focused its net zero efforts in three key areas: green design, energy conservation and carbon reduction, and responsible supply chain management. MediaTek pledges that by 2030 all of its worldwide offices will be powered with 100% renewable energy, and by 2050 the company will reach its goal of net zero emissions.

MediaTek operates in more than 50 offices across Asia, the U.S. and Europe. To reduce greenhouse gas emissions of its internal and external operations, the company has formulated a systematic blueprint and net zero pathway, with specific actions including introducing energy saving data centers, improving energy conservation in office spaces and equipment, installing rooftop solar panels and introducing green power procurement plans. At the same time, MediaTek has introduced environmentally friendly designs into its product life cycle by reducing product energy consumption and product dimensions. It also extended carbon management practices to its supply chain partners, thereby leading the value chain in implementing green operations from the inside out.

Reflecting on MediaTek's commitment to sustainability, Rick Tsai, MediaTek's Vice Chairman, CEO and Chairperson of the Sustainability Committee, said: "MediaTek is a global leader of innovative IC design technologies. MediaTek's commitment to green innovation is also reflected in its chipset design. Taking the environment into consideration, MediaTek's chipsets are designed to have high efficiency in a compact size, significantly reducing power consumption for electronic products. In 2021, MediaTek's chipsets reduced power consumption by an average of 23% in comparison to the year prior. The electricity saved was equal to the amount required to power 170,000 Taiwanese households for an entire year.

To actively respond to worldwide greenhouse gas mitigation initiatives and the carbon reduction goals of the UN's 26th Climate Change Conference (COP26), MediaTek has completed certifications to ISO 14064 Standard for Greenhouse Gas Inventories and Verification and ISO 50001 Energy Management Systems Standard. Additionally, MediaTek has driven its supply chain partners to reduce carbon intensity by at least 2% for the past two consecutive years. MediaTek is listed in several overseas benchmark sustainability indexes, including MSCI Taiwan ESG Leaders Index, FTSE4Good Emerging Index, FTSE4Good TIP Taiwan ESG Index and the TIP Taiwan Environmental Sustainability Index, showcasing how the company's governance in environmental issues has been well received by investors.
