Art Basel: The art world meets again in Basel

It will be one of the first major international events after the lockdown in Switzerland - and also one of the first major physical events in the international art market: Art Basel from 24 to 26 September 2021 in Basel. The physical show will be amplified with numerous digital formats in order to appeal the broadest possible global audience, both on-site and online.

At Art Basel in Basel, 272 leading galleries from Europe, Asia, North and South America, the Middle East and Africa will present the highest quality of artworks. In the main sector of the show, 221 galleries will show a wide range of artworks - from paintings, sculptures, installations, photographs to video and digital art and editions. The 'Feature' sector will include ambitiously curated presentations by some two dozen galleries, including numerous first-time exhibitors. A similarly large number of individual presentations will be shown in the 'Statements' sector, which is dedicated to emerging artists. Furthermore, in the 'Edition' sector leading galleries from the field of prints and editions will be represented for the first time:

'Art Basel Unlimited,' curated for the first time by Giovanni Carmine, director of Kunst Halle Sankt Gallen, will show about 60 large-scale projects by renowned and emerging artists. Two separate art interventions will be presented on the 'Messeplatz'. The 12th edition of 'Parcours' will feature 20 site-specific artworks in the center of Basel. The film program at 'Stadtkino Basel' and the 'Conversation' panels are other program highlights around Art Basel.

Combining physical and digital platforms

Marc Spiegler, Global Director of Art Basel says, 'During the pandemic, opportunities were limited to discover the works of new artists and meet new collectors who support their program. That's why it's important to be able to stage our show again in person, while at the same time building upon the digital innovations of the past year to continue engaging the broadest possible audiences worldwide.'

Indeed, Art Basel in Basel will embrace a hybrid format combining physical and digital platforms. 'Art Basel Live,' the digital initiative first launched at Art Basel in Hong Kong, will complement the onsite presentations in Basel, transmitting the vibrancy and excitement from the show floor to the broadest possible global audience through a digital program comprising Online Viewing Rooms, virtual walkthroughs, and social media broadcasts.

The Art Basel team places the utmost importance on the health safety of people on-site. For this purpose, a detailed Covid protection concept was developed. Admission to the show is restricted to persons who have been vaccinated, recovered or tested and can present a valid Covid certificate. In addition, masks are mandatory in all exhibition halls. To ensure a smooth visit, a Covid Certificate Center will be set up where certification will be checked and visitors can also get tested.
