Kirin Holdings Co. said Friday it will end its beer partnership with Myanmar's Myanma Economic Holdings Public Co. that is linked to the country's military following a coup in the Southeast Asian nation.

Kirin said the Japanese brewer was "deeply concerned" by the Myanmar military's actions that were "against our standards and human rights policy."

"Given the current circumstances, we have no option but to terminate our current joint-venture partnership with Myanma Economic Holdings Public Company Limited, which provides the service of welfare fund management for the military," Kirin said in a statement.

"We will be taking steps as a matter of urgency to put this termination into effect," the company said.

The military seized power in a coup earlier in the week, detaining civilian leader Aung San Suu Kyi.

Kirin invested in Myanmar in 2015 when the country moved toward democratization. It has two joint ventures -- Myanmar Brewery Ltd. and Mandalay Brewery Ltd. -- with Myanma Economic Holdings, which the United Nations has identified as being owned by senior members of the military.

After concerns were raised about the partner's financial and governance structures, Kirin conducted a review and stopped dividend payments from the ventures.
