Hangzhou Hikvision Digital Technology : How Riyadh Animal Shelter solves its security challenges with Hikvision

To protect animals and visitors, Riyadh Animal Shelter needs to monitor its buildings, and the surrounding area, 24 hours a day. To boost security, and to maximize time and resources for looking after animals, Hikvision has contributed a new, AI-powered smart-video solution.

Caring for vulnerable animals with nowhere else to go

Riyadh Animal Shelter is the first licensed shelter in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. The center's mission is to care for animals in need of help and medical treatment, before finding them good, permanent homes. Thanks to the constant efforts of staff and volunteers, the shelter has rescued, treated, and sheltered thousands of animals in need.

The security challenge - how to keep animals and visitors safe

To keep animals and visitors to the center safe, Riyadh Animal Shelter was using a CCTV security solution. Unfortunately, the video footage in the previous system had to be constantly monitored manually by staff and volunteers, leaving them less time to look after animals and to receive families looking to adopt pets.

What the center needed was a more sophisticated, automated security solution that was more reliable, and easier to manage.

Partnering with Hikvision make things better

Despite the need for an updated security system, Riyadh Animal Shelter's animal care and rehoming priorities meant that budgets for new infrastructure and technology were limited.

And so, to help boost security and operating efficiency, whilst automating security monitoring at the same time, Hikvision MENA has contributed a state-of-the-art, IP security system. This incorporates 32 cameras equipped with Hikvision's AcuSense and ColorVu technologies, as well as Hikvision PTZ cameras that eliminate blind spots in the animal play yard.

The entire solution - including the smart control room equipment - can be managed quickly and easily via the Hik-Connect app. This also allows staff and volunteers to watch live video feeds anytime, anywhere, and on any device. In the event of a security breach, nominated people can receive alerts to their mobile devices in real time, allowing them to respond quickly and effectively to protect animals or visitors.

Importantly, Hikvision ColorVu technology provides crystal clear video 24 hours a day, seven days a week. This also applies at night and in low-light conditions, which means that both daytime and nighttime security incidents are reliably detected and recorded.

Ensuring that animals are not abandoned at the center

The center asks all people signing an animal into the facility to attend an appointment to explain their circumstances and the animal's history and medical condition. In the past, however, many animals were simply abandoned close to the center, making them much more difficult to care for and rehome.

With automated vehicle and human recognition capabilities, the Hikvision solution is now helping to prevent animals being abandoned in this way. This helps to ensure that people follow proper procedures which, in turn, means that every animal has the best possible chance of rehabilitation and a new life.
