A major milestone was reached at the beginning of the summer when the electrification of the gantry cranes Stormur and Grettir was completed. This means that all Eimskip cranes in the port area of Reykjavík use electricity instead of fossil fuels. There are a total of 4 gantry cranes in the harbor area; Jakinn, Grettir, Stormur, and Straumur, which is Eimskip's newest crane.

It is not an easy task to electrify gantry cranes. Eimskip's electricians and mechanics took a direct part in the project along with foreign partners, but the technical equipment of the cranes had to be changed to use electricity from land instead of the diesel engines.

One of Eimskip's biggest sustainability projects is to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, and the company has set itself an ambitious goal in this regard. Greenhouse emission projects are directly linked to the UN's global goal of climate action, which Eimskip emphasizes.

Vilhelm Már Þorsteinsson, CEO:
'This is a positive step in the right direction on Eimskip's sustainability journey. We place great emphasis on recognizing the risks associated with sustainability in our operations and work systematically to reduce them. Not only are we moving closer to our goal of reducing Eimskip's carbon footprint by 40% by 2030, but this change will have a positive effect on other aspects of our operations, such as local air pollution from operations and noise.'
