XXIXth version of the main steel design contest for students:

The purpose of the award is to stimulate creative work from students that benefits the population, together with incorporating the multiple qualities of steel into the field of architecture.

Latin America and the Carribean have experienced important processes of urbanization in the last few years, making it the region with the highest percentage of urban inhabitants in the developing world. In the specific case of Chile, the new Urban Development Policy establishes that the country has reached high levels of urbanization among its initial indicators, with 87% of the population residing in cities. This out of control urban growth has also brought with it different problems for the population, making it urgently necessary to design and implement policies regarding territorial structuring, urban densification, housing construction, and infrastructure.

Taking all of the aforementioned into consideration, the "2015 CAP Contest for Architecture Students" has decided to propose this year a theme that takes into consideration the city, sports, and its organized inhabitants: a "Sports and Social Center" inserted into cities with regional or provincial characteristics as a tool to help structure deteriorated areas, increase the existing sports infrastructure, bring together neighbors of all ages, and to be an engine for social organization and cohesion.

According to Álvaro Donoso, the contest director, "for a city to be able to consolidate its development, city planning, improvement, and restructuring are necessary, as well as the construction of infrastructure for the inhabitants and social organizations that lack it, and not only housing solutions. Dignified facilities guarantee better living conditions and help in the protection and safety of its citizens".

The renown architect added that "students should set themselves the goal of improving the quality of life of the population through the construction of facilities within the city as a strategy for the recovery and revitalization of deteriorated marginal neighborhoods; this through the intervention of areas that don't have any infrastructure and services, but that can be appropriate for a project of this kind".

A type of project program that indicates the scale of the intervention is suggested in the Contest Rules. The main accent of the proposal must be in generating an innovative, economical, and practical solution for the "Sports and Social Center" project, as well as its equipping, including an adequate insertion in the chosen location, treatment of the surrounding areas, and the correct use of steel which students must solve in some detail. "The projects must place special care in the originality of the chosen construction solution, as well as in the proposal of solutions regarding topics such as the environment, and energy conservation", said the contest director.

Registration
The contest is open to all Architecture students currently studying in any Chilean university recognized by the National Accreditation Council. The registration of university teams can be done until May 8, 2015, while the deadline for the delivery of the preliminary projects is July 24, 2015.

Interested parties can access the contest rules at its website: www.concursocap.cl, or on Facebook https://www.facebook.com/ConcursoCap, where they will be able to find information regarding the latest developments and results of each of the contest stages.

This year the contest winners will receive a $4 million peso prize, while the second and third place winners will receive prizes of $2.5 and $1.5 million pesos, respectively.

International Contest
The CAP contest has been held every year for almost three decades, and its purpose is to increase the levels of knowledge and understanding regarding the qualities of steel as an anti-seismic, architectural, and structural element in the development of our cities. The renowned contest, run by the Architect Álvaro Donoso Holzmann, has become part of the learning process at most of Chile's Schools of Architecture

The winning preliminary project of the 2015 CAP Contest will have the chance to participate in the International Version of the Contest, organized by the Latin American Steel Association, ALACERO. Invited countries such as Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Columbia, Ecuador, Mexico, Peru, Venezuela, and Dominican Republic, participate in this contest, inspired by the contest created by CAP.
