Discount retailer Big Lots aims to open 500 stores in the next few years, with 50 popping up this year, and then launching about 80 locations on an ongoing annual basis.

The news comes as consumers are increasingly nervous about inflation as well as spending due to the ongoing COVID-19 virus and its variant.

Early in 2020 the chain was cited as an essential retailer as it sold food and household goods, and its stores remained opened while other retailers shuttered doors due to mandates and restrictions, according to a CNN report.
