The Kickstart Scheme, part of the government's Plan for Jobs, aims to create hundreds of thousands of job placements nationally for 16 to 24 year olds on Universal Credit, who are at risk of long-term unemployment.

The scheme is designed to give Kickstart joiners the opportunity to build their skills, confidence and gain experience with the aim of improving their chances of finding long-term work.

Evan joined us at our Glascoed site and was allocated a mentor to help guide his placement with us. He worked with a number of different teams, gaining experience and skills throughout his six-month programme.

Celebrating Success

We'd like to say a big congratulations to Evan who following his successful Kickstart programme, was offered an apprenticeship and started a Mechanical Technician apprenticeship with us in September.

Evan said: "I've thoroughly enjoyed my placement; it has enabled me to gain key experience in various aspects of our business which has helped me to make a far more informed decision about my future career.

"The Kickstart programme, for me, has been incredibly important. Before starting in this role, I knew that I wanted to work in the engineering sector but didn't have much of an idea about what I specifically wanted to do. Kickstart has allowed me to get a taste of what different careers in this field would be like, which I wouldn't have been able to do without this scheme.

"The best part for me so far has been the work itself. Getting a chance to sample and observe different careers and work with friendly and informative teams has been fantastic and incredibly enjoyable."

Owain Morgan, Mechanical Services Manager and Evan's mentor explained, "The Kickstart programme is an excellent opportunity for young people interested in Engineering that are not currently in work to gain vital work experience. Evan has shown a great attitude to work and has taken many different challenges head on, building confidence, communication skills and learning different element of manufacturing and engineering.

The best part for me so far has been the work itself. Getting a chance to sample and observe different careers and work with friendly and informative teams has been fantastic and incredibly enjoyable.

, Kickstart joiner

"Mentoring Evan has involved developing a placement plan for him to gain experience across a number of departments. Regular reviews have ensured that the Kickstart programme has developed Evan's engineering knowledge as well as a number of other skills necessary for a work environment. This has given Evan the opportunity to progress onto his Mechanical Apprenticeship which we were so pleased to offer him - he thoroughly deserves it."

Paul Kelly, Early Careers Manager said: "It's fantastic to be involved with Kickstart - it's rewarding to see Evan flourish and become part of our Munitions team. The Kickstart scheme is really important to help bring fresh talent to our business and support people to have the start to working life they need. The young people of today are those that will drive the manufacturing capabilities of the country and ensure that we remain at the cutting edge of innovation."
