2011 NAB Show (National Association of Broadcasters), LVCC Booth #SL9126 - Rorke Data, an Avnet, Inc. (NYSE: AVT) company, today announced the general availability of the latest model within its Galaxy® storage product line - the Galaxy Aurora 36. The Galaxy Aurora 36 is optimized to support today's high-resolution media and entertainment content creation workflows. The storage solution provides an industry-leading price-to-performance ratio, and can be positioned as a direct-attach RAID system or used with most high-performance storage area network (SAN) applications.

"The Galaxy Aurora 36 storage solution makes fast work of video content creation and is at a price that's cost-effective for production houses of all sizes," said Joe Rorke, vice president of marketing for Rorke Data. "Driven by the growth of 3D video and the general acceptance of high-resolution tapeless camera workflows, many post-production houses need to provide support for 2K and 4K video resolution standards. The Galaxy Aurora 36 meets these needs by delivering value-priced storage that's robust enough to support three simultaneous streams of 2K video and is suited for the storage-intensive DPX-based workflows inherent to the post-production process."

Whether for editing, 3D, DI or high-end color work, the Galaxy Aurora 36 provides cost-effective RAID 6 storage to support multi-stream, frame-accurate, shared file-based workflows throughout the post-production process. A single Galaxy Aurora 36 4RU RAID box supports three simultaneous streams of 2K while sustaining more than 4000 MB/sec transfer rate. The solution also provides up to 108TBs of capacity at 50 cents per GB MSRP.

Galaxy Aurora 36 features include:

  • Up to 4500MB/sec transfer rates in a single 36-bay enclosure to support multi-stream 2K and 4K resolution workflows, depending on the number of drives and drive rpm
  • 108TB per enclosure, lower capacity 12- or 24-bay enclosure options
  • SAN-ready compatibility with HyperFS, Xsan, StorNext, FibreJet and MetaSAN
  • MSRP starts at 50 cents per GB

Beyond its outstanding capacity, speed and price, the Galaxy Aurora 36 also provides comprehensive management features that are optimized for the unique requirements of the content creation market, such as:

Zero Impact Drive Rebuild

The Galaxy Aurora 36's Zero Impact Drive Rebuild feature keeps the post-production facility running at full bandwidth should a drive failure occur. The solution is robust enough to process failed RAID sets in the background during production, while ensuring full bandwidth to all users on the SAN.

Real-Time Initiator (RTI)

RTI is the Galaxy Aurora 36's quality of service performance tuning feature that allows users to prioritize I/O bandwidth to specific client stations depending on their individual application requirements. This feature enables improved workflow within the production process in house.

Drive Performance Tracking

Galaxy Aurora 36 users are able to identify and graphically view the performance of individual storage drives in order to proactively identify issues and replace drives in the RAID set before they cause data integrity problems.

Trace I/O Command Tracking

This feature enables users to identify and graphically present every I/O command that a Galaxy Aurora 36 processes. This unique technical setup and troubleshooting feature allows engineers to monitor, trace and tune the storage system for specific applications.

The Galaxy Aurora 36 is available through authorized Rorke Data resellers in the US and Canada and will be demonstrated at Rorke Data's 2011 NAB Show booth (#SL9126) at the Las Vegas Convention Center through April 14.
