International stocks trading in New York closed higher on Wednesday.

The S&P/BNY Mellon index of American depositary receipts rose 1.7% to 141.66. The European index gained 1.2% to 133.16. The Asian index advanced 2.5% to 169.96. The Latin American index climbed 1.7% to 194.86, while the emerging-markets index moved up 2.1% to 290.34.

Aviva PLC was among those whose ADRs traded actively.

The FTSE 100 insurer rose 13% after posting an increase in operating profit for the first half of 2022, backed its dividend guidance for the full year and outlined further plans for capital returns.

Chinese e-commerce giant Alibaba Group Holding Ltd. rose 1.4% after SoftBank Group Corp. said it would sharply reduce its stake in the company.
