Merrick, NY (September 16, 2021)-As part of its routine maintenance program, New York American Water (NYAW) will begin flushing of water mains throughout its service territory on September 27, 2021, to deliver quality water service to its customers. Water main flushing clears harmless sediment and mineral deposits that may have built up over time inside the pipes. The process of flushing water mains by opening fire hydrants helps to alleviate this issue while also providing an opportunity to ensure hydrants are operational and there are adequate flows in the system.

'Flushing our water mains is an operational best practice and helps improve water quality for our customers,' said NYAW Senior Manager of Production Rich Kern. 'The process of flushing water mains may cause minor temporary inconveniences such as water discoloration or low pressure. If discoloration occurs, please run your cold water from the lowest point in the home until the water runs clear.'

Water main flushing will occur between Monday to Friday, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. in the following areas on the following dates. No flushing will be conducted in observance of Columbus Day (Oct. 11), Diwali (Nov. 4) and Veterans Day (Nov. 11).

To prepare for flushing in your neighborhood, please take a look at the following tips from NYAW:

  • Make note on your calendar of your community's scheduled flushing times.
  • Draw water needed for cooking ahead of time and set aside a large bottle of water in the refrigerator for drinking or future use.
  • If water pressure or volume appears low after the flushing has finished, inspect the faucet screens for any trapped particles.
  • Check for discolored water prior to using a washing machine or a dishwasher.
  • If laundry does become stained, do not put it in the dryer. Rewash clothes right away with a heavy duty detergent and add a rust remover.

NYAW asks all residents to please continue adhering to all social distancing rules if they are near a crew performing flushing in their area. The employees and contractors are doing essential work to keep your water safe, so please help keep them safe as well.
