White House opposes EV mileage tax, adjusting gas tax for inflation - source

06/10/2021 | 04:43pm

WASHINGTON, June 10 (Reuters) - The White House opposes any effort to index gasoline taxes to account for inflation or require electric vehicles to pay a mileage fee to help fund an infrastructure package, a person familiar with Biden's thinking told Reuters on Thursday.

Some lawmakers on Thursday expressed support for adjusting the gasoline tax to account for inflation and others have called for making EV users also pay for highway repairs. The federal gasoline tax has remained at 18.4 cents a gallon since 1993, making it worth 10.1 cents a gallon in real terms. The person said higher fees or gas taxes would violate Biden's pledge not to raise taxes on Americans who earn under $400,000 a year. (Reporting by David Shepardson; Editing by Leslie Adler)
