US Stocks Rise as Details Set to Emerge on Biden's Economic Relief Program; Jobless Claims Surge to Four-Month High

(MT Newswires) -- US stocks rose on Thursday ahead of President-elect Joe Biden's stimulus package announcement while weekly jobless claims surged to the highest level in more than four months.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average climbed by 121.15 points, or 0.4%, to 31,180.82, with the S&P 500 higher by 0.2% to 3,815.69 and the Nasdaq Composite Index was up by 0.4% to 13,183.98. Energy and industrials were the biggest gainers while the consumer staples and utilities sectors were the steepest decliners around midday on Thursday.

The US 10-year yield rose by less than 1 basis point to 1.09%, declining from as high as 1.17% seen earlier this week.
