US ECONOMICS: December Durable Goods New Orders Below Expectations, Ex-Transport Higher

(MT Newswires) -- New orders for US durable goods rose by only 0.2% in December, following an upwardly revised November gain of 1.2% and well below expectations for a 1% increase in a survey compiled by Bloomberg.
Excluding a 1% decline in transportation orders, however, new orders would have been up 0.7% in December after a 0.8% increase in November. Expectations were for a smaller 0.5% increase.
Durable goods shipment rose by 1.4% after a 0.4% increase in November. Excluding transportation, shipments were up 0.8% after a 0.3% gain in the previous month.
Nondefense capital goods orders excluding aircraft were up 0.6% in the month, shipments in the same category rose by 0.5%. These data feed into nonresidential fixed investment for the quarter.
